The grieving mother of the RG Kar Hospital junior doctor, who was raped and murdered in August 2024, has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and ensure justice for her daughter.
Mother's Plea for Justice
Speaking on International Women’s Day, the mother questioned the state of women's safety in West Bengal, expressing deep frustration over the delay in justice.
"I want to meet the PM and request him to intervene in our appeal for justice for my deceased daughter," she said.
Family's Fight for Justice Continues
The tragic incident occurred on August 9, 2024, when the 31-year-old junior doctor was brutally raped and murdered at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, triggering nationwide outrage. Despite the passage of seven months, the grieving family claimed they had yet to receive the death certificate.
"Our daughter had big dreams. We never imagined such a tragic fate. Seven months have passed, but where is justice?" her mother asked.
Raising concerns about workplace safety, she added, “If a woman doctor is unsafe at her workplace, then where is security?”
Political Reactions to the Mother's Appeal
Responding to her request to meet PM Modi, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul mentioned there is a formal process to seek an appointment but assured that Modi would hear the family’s plea. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress leader and state finance minister Chandrima Bhattacharya stated that while anyone has the right to meet the PM, she highlighted that CM Mamata Banerjee had already ensured the arrest of the culprit.
Legal Battle and Appeals for Death Sentence
A sessions court in Kolkata sentenced the accused, Sanjay Roy, a Kolkata Police civic volunteer, to life imprisonment till death on January 20, 2025. However, both the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the West Bengal state government have filed appeals in the Calcutta High Court, seeking the death penalty for Roy.
On February 7, 2025, the Calcutta High Court rejected the state government's appeal against the life sentence but agreed to hear the CBI’s plea for capital punishment.
What Lies Ahead?
The victim's family continues to demand swift justice and stricter punishment for the convict, hoping that PM Modi’s intervention will accelerate legal proceedings. Meanwhile, concerns over women's safety and justice delivery remain crucial in this high-profile case, with both state and central agencies engaged in the legal battle.
