Development of kidney epithelial cells

Renal research has focused on the development of kidney epithelial cells. The renal epithelium is quite heterogeneous, showing variability in different regions of the nephron. Some studies have reported that during tissue repair, differentiated epithelial cells dedifferentiate into mesenchymal cells.

It has spurred the analysis of these cells and their developmental pathways. Kidney epithelium originates from intermediate mesoderm, and the organ undergoes three stages- pronephros, mesonephros, and metanephros. Although mesenchymal cells transform into epithelial cells, interactions between both cell types are vital for proper tissue development. Research on these pathways will facilitate repair of damaged kidneys and development of more effective therapeutics.
