Whether sorting pebbles, aligning bottle tops or lining socks, children practise counting and sequencing in a visual and tactile way. Sand and water play act as natural environments to explore capacity and measurement, while games such as dominoes or Uno extend combinatorial thinking and basic calculation skills. Board games like Monopoly or snakes and ladders introduce time, money and subtraction in context. We advise gradual introduction of calculators and simple technology when children are ready.
