Ulysse Nardin's Freak collection makes a strong comeback with the FreakLab, a fresh interpretation of this iconic timepiece that introduces three major innovations.
Unlike the Freak Cruiser (2013) and Blue Cruiser (2014), the new FreakLab places the balance wheel in the center of the dial, reducing its weight and making it easier to read.
The movement has no dial or hands, rotating around its own axis. The lower layer displays the hours, while the upper layer (containing the gear train, balance wheel, hairspring, and the unique Dual Ulysse silicon escapement) displays the minutes.
Unlike traditional escapement forks and escape wheels, the Dual Ulysse escapement uses two silicon pulse wheels, each with 18 meshing teeth, which alternately drive a stop. The stop then transfers energy directly to the balance wheel axis, first in one direction and then in the other. Therefore, this mechanism requires no lubrication and always transmits power in the direction of the balance wheel's rotation, minimizing friction.
