The 37-0 South Carolina Gamecocks will try to become the first team to go undefeated and win a national championship since 2016 when they face Caitlin Clark and her Iowa Hawkeyes on Sunday afternoon in Cleveland.
South Carolina, currently 6.5-point favorites, is playing in its fourth straight Final Four, but it’s just the second time the Gamecocks have made the title game during that stretch, winning it all in 2022.
Iowa, led by Clark, upset an undefeated South Carolina squad in last year’s national semifinals to advance to the championship where the Hawkeyes eventually lost to LSU.
Fast-forward one season, and Clark and Co. upset LSU in the Elite Eight and now have a chance to ruin USC’s perfect season again and claim Iowa’s first women’s title in program history.
Below FrontPageBets takes a look at this massive matchup, including picks and predictions:
2024 Women’s National Championship Game odds: South Carolina (-6.5) vs. Iowa – 3 p.m. on ESPN (April 7)
South Carolina’s All-American, 6-foot-7 center Kamilla Cardoso scored 22 points in the Gamecocks’ national semifinal win over N.C. State on Friday night.
But that wasn’t the whole story. South Carolina played nine players and got contributions from all of them, including Ashlyn Watkins’ 20 rebounds. Eight of the nine scored at least 3 points for USC.
And they needed it, as the Gamecocks only led by 1 point heading into halftime. But then, the real South Carolina stepped up, outscoring the Wolfpack 29-6 in the third quarter to win going away, 78-59.
Oh, and Cardoso pulled in 11 rebounds to go along with her 22 points, playing just 23 minutes.
After dropping 41 points, including an NCAA Tournament record-tying nine 3-pointers in the Elite Eight against LSU, Clark was held in check Friday night against UConn in their national semifinal matchup. For the first half, at least.
The NCAA’s leading scorer found a way to get loose in the second half, finishing with 21 points, including scoring 7 points in the final 2½ minutes to help seal the win.
But the thing about this Iowa team is that Clark doesn’t always have to carry the weight. While she was struggling, Hannah Stuelke stepped in, scoring 23 points to lead the Hawkeyes against UConn.
They also got some big baskets from others down the stretch, including Kate Martin, who finished with 11.
Iowa will need Stuelke to be big against Cardoso.
And, of course, Clark needs to play the best game of her career against a team that is outscoring opponents by nearly 30 points a game this season.
The pick: Iowa +6.5
