Historically, the mental health system has poorly served LGBTQIA+ people. Until 1973, homosexuality was labeled a disorder, and non-heterosexual identities continued to be pathologized until the DSM-5 in 2013 the same year “gender identity disorder” was removed. While progress has been made, there is still a long way to go.
